Math in America

The grades and test scores of students in the United States is a growing concern. One subject of great importance is mathematics. Most high growth jobs in America require math skills. The US recently ranked 26th out of the top 30 industrialized nations in math and 19th in science. This does not bode well for the future employment prospects of American students. The public education system in America is currently under much scrutiny. Organizations that are concerned with the state of math scores in the United States have championed the importance of recruiting, training, and retaining qualified math teachers. In some areas of the country, programs are now in place to support outstanding math teachers who are already in the classroom. Dedicated teachers may use such a program to earn a master’s degree in mathematics education.
Due to the high incidence of social promotion, the passing of students who should not have passed, struggling math students are often placed in classes that they are not prepared for. Students who have difficulty with basic arithmetic in elementary and middle school may find themselves pushed into classes that they should not be placed in. Some states have adopted “Algebra for all eighth graders” policies. While the expectation is that these students take Algebra, the goal should be that students learn Algebra. Such policies have made it difficult for many underprepared students to succeed in school. Many low achieving math students in high school are actually in advanced math classes.
The test scores of students in big city school districts once lagged far behind districts in suburban and rural areas. Today, however, according to the Brown Center Report on American Education, many big city school districts have made significant gains and are closing the gap. One possible influence is the No Child Left Behind Act. One component of this Act, the Supplemental Educational Services, provides free academic assistance to children in low income families and underperforming schools who need help in subjects such as Math and English.
There are now tutoring organizations that partner with the Department of Education and the school districts of the students that they assist. Advancements in technology have given students the opportunity to receive online math tutoring at any time, including nights, weekends, and during the summer. With highly qualified math teachers, parental involvement, and educational assistance, American students can reach their potential and achieve academic success.

Technical Writing – Wurman’s LATCH Concept of Organizing Information For Technical Documentation

Technical writing has its mechanical aspects that need to be mastered. A good technical writer must know how to use English effectively as well as various software products to produce acceptable technical documents.
But I wish technical writing was that simple. The hardest part comes before one even sits down in front of a computer to type the first word.
The hardest part in documenting anything is organizing the information in a way that makes sense from the user’s point of view.
If, for example, you are documenting a software package, are you going to introduce installation first, configuration next, and operation the last?
Or are you perhaps going to introduce the way software is installed in different factory sites and organize the information around such geographic markers?
If you are writing a manual about dogs, are you going to introduce them according to their size, country of origin, temperament, or what?
Richard Saul Wurman, a legendary technical communicator who has written extensively about the issue, has introduced the LATCH concept, an acronym made up of the first letters of the following information organization principles:
– Location
– Alphabet
– Time
– Category
– Hierarchy
Wurman claims that ANY INFORMATION can be categorized neatly along these 5 dimensions and he may be right about that. It’s just a useful tool to keep in mind when you are trying to decide how to make sense of your subject matter.
For example, if you’re writing a City Guide, you can of course use L (Location) easily and divide the guide into districts, neighborhoods, etc.
Once you do that, you can switch to T (Time) perhaps and talk about what is “old and historic” and what’s “brand new” in every location.
How about C (Category)? “Residential” versus “Commercial”? Or “Downtown” versus “Suburbs”?
The possibilities are infinite of course.
So the next time you need to organize information, it might save you time and energy to start with LATCH dimensions and see which ones serve your documentation goal the best.

Grant Writing – Grant Requests Are Not Research Papers

While grant requests are usually written on paper, and prospective funders usually expect to see research, an effective request isn’t a research paper.
Confused? Don’t be.
Research papers are a staple of American colleges and universities. They serve a very important purpose: teaching students how to present a thesis statement, find research to support it, and then present those findings in a carefully organized fashion. Papers that earn high grades tend to be very logical and written in the complex style preferred by the academic world.
Most students learn fairly quickly that their grades on research papers will climb when they use longer, more complex sentences, four-syllable words, and as many resources as possible. Before long, those tricks become habits, and their papers become more impressive and (sadly) less communicative.
Unfortunately, those habits often follow students long after Commencement. When they enter the working world, they’re required to write memos, letters, proposals, and requests – and many immediately fall back on that familiar style.
When it comes to grant requests – even a request for funding of a research project – it’s important to remember that the primary purpose is not to advance and provide support for a thesis statement. That’s true whether it’s an application to a federal agency for research dollars, a request to the community foundation to support a new charitable effort, or a letter to a corporation to request a contribution for a local not-for-profit.
The purpose of that request is to persuade the recipient to share some or all of its dollars with the organization making the request. To do that effectively, it has to accomplish several things.
First, it has to make sure the request is clear and understandable – and that’s where research papers fall woefully short. Those long, complex sentences and huge words lifted from the thesaurus actually get in the way of understanding. The all-important reviewers may or may not grasp exactly what the organization plans to do, and how or why. Will they be willing to fund something they can’t understand? (And how many of us are fearless enough to come back to the writer and admit we don’t understand what they’ve written?)
Second, a grant request has to gain the reviewer’s confidence. If an organization is about to hand over a hefty chunk of cash, it needs to be certain that the money will go to good use. If your needs, objectives, goals, and measurement are clear and easily understood, it suggests that your organization uses sound business practices and will treat the funder’s contribution with respect. Should that funder have to read your words three or four times to understand what you want and why, he or she may come away with the idea that you’re not sure, either.
Finally, the request has to present the program or objective as something that can succeed. If it’s cloaked in doubletalk and fancy words, it’s likely to raise questions – even subconsciously – as to whether the idea has substance. Write in that familiar research paper style, and your favorite project may sound more like a hazy theory than something you can accomplish. But clear language, active voice, and similar statements will give your request the solidity it needs. When you do present research, do so in simple, confident ways.
A college education is a critical part of your personal and professional development, and learning how to write research papers helps you develop skills that benefit you in more ways than you could imagine. But when it comes to developing grant requests, leave the academic language back in the land of beer pong and all-nighters, and promote your program with the skills and confidence you have today.

The Role of Prior Research in Essay Writing

In fact, this should be considered as an easy research and writing process once you know all what it takes to carry out a perfect research. Any conscientious student who thinks of succeeding in a prior research and writing must be prepared to carry out research more than what was done in the class. For this reason, you must be able to start as soon as the topic for the paper is approved. In such a case, you will be the one in person to decide on the topic. This will however be based on a previous research you had done or on any studies done by another researcher.
Before you decide on what to write about, you should think about the time limit set for the research and writing. Remember that this type of academic work will be a very certain pursuit and you will have to work within a given time limit. Therefore, you must be sure that you have all the resources or materials at hand to compose the essay. Your topic should also have a direction. It should not be broad enough. Remember that your essay may be a vague quest if you write all the fine materials but fail to prove something scholastic.
If you are certain that your essay will be dependent on a previous research, you must be versed with all what obtains in that previous research. There is no way you can conveniently write on something in which you have no knowledge about. Keep in mind that you must know everything about that research and not just a bit of everything about it. Take note that you may be called up at any time to defend what you have written in your essay.
Use an outline to write your essay and make sure that you write with a draft. The outline is very necessary because this is a serious research and writing. You may come across points that you find either irrelevant or relevant to your essay. The outline makes it feasible and flexible for them to be included in your paper. This is also true if you will want to change the course or direction of your writing.
Essay prior research should be concluded in a manner similar to every perfect essay. At the close of your essay, the reader should know what stand or position you have taken. This position should be stated unwaveringly. Your essay should be properly revised and edited. Make sure that you give enough time to this. Revision and editing are amongst the most important features in research and writing. Your essay needs to have a perfect finishing. Make sure that all your ideas are linked to each other; make sure that they are represented logically and chronologically and make sure that the reader understands what you intended to say.

7 Tips to Overcome Plagiarism in Your Essays

You are more than likely a little tired of hearing the word plagiarism, but, if you are conscious about doing well at college and university, then you should be clearly aware of what plagiarism is, how easily you can fall into the trap, and how you will be able to identify quickly if you have mistakenly plagiarised someone else’s work and remove it.
Tip 1 – Know what Plagiarism is
You should become accustomed to what plagiarism actually is – essentially it is passing of someone else’s work as your own. Doing so in academic writing means that you are not acknowledging where you have gained the information and understanding of the topic on which you are writing, and after all you are not expected to know everything!
Tip 2 – Don’t copy any work verbatim
Copying work verbatim means copying someone else’s work word for word with no acknowledgment to who or where the work has come from. This is different from a direct citation, as with a citation you are acknowledging where exactly the words have come from as well as evidence of your reading.
Tip 3 – Copying and Pasting is a no, no
You should resist the temptation of copying and pasting any material from someone else’s work and changing a few verbs around, and replacing a few other words just isn’t right. Even if you put a reference to where you got this information in reference list as you are still copying most of the words from the original writing.
Tip 4 – Keep track of your sources
You may do all of your research on a note pad, and at the back write down all of the full references of the sources you are using. I used to do this and found it to be of great help – it is so frustrating when you have a great quotation, but can’t use it as you can not remember where in the hell you actually jotted it down from. Keeping track of and organising your sources is key to keeping on top of preventing plagiarism.
Tip 5 – Practise expressing some else’s ideas
You will be writing about many different author’s notions and ideas throughout your work, so practicing doing so will lead to you increasingly understanding how to do this process. You want to be able to express other people’s opinions and processes fluently and not being able to do so can lead you to copy and plagiarism other individual’s work.
Tip 6 – Believe in your own writing and conclusions
You wouldn’t have be able to get into your current course if people didn’t think you would be able to complete the work set out without committing plagiarism. You want to be able to prove to yourself how much you want your qualification and you should be able to write in your won words an understanding of certain theories and understanding within a chosen topic. You will need to conclude your writing too, so you will need to know in-depth about what you have written in your paper.
Tip 7 – Check your work
Sometimes, and even without noticing, you could be plagiarising someone else’s work in your essay or paper. This isn’t because you have done it knowingly, but it could be that the 2am mad writing session was pretty tiring and you actually added a part of a paragraph that now doesn’t look like your actual writing. Checking through your own work will mean that you should spot some areas that you may have approached the plagiarism boundary and need to steer yourself away from it.
You could also additionally have a professional proofreader look over your document for you and bring a different view to your writing, this increases your chances of making sure your work doesn’t contain any plagiarism.
